If you’ve seen Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, you know that there’s a particular heist sequence that involves a portrait, a portal, a moving carriage, and various shenanigans that may or may not break the rules of gravity. A new behind-the-scenes feature describes how the cast and crew created that scene and reveals that, except for the two directors, no one knew what the heck was going on.
The clip first shared via Collider is a bonus feature on the movie’s digital release, which happens to be available today. In it, directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley say they always knew how the sequence with the moving portal was going to work, while the cast and other crew members said they had no idea what was going on. Ever.
“No one quite grasped what we were doing, even as we were doing it,” producer Jeremy Latcham confesses in the clip. To be fair, the sequence involved them shooting upside down underneath a moving carriage while the wizard Simon (Justice Smith) is getting pulled in two different directions in two very different environments. It’s complicated and has a lot of moving pieces, just like every good heist should be!
